02/25/2011 4:30 PM - San Angelo, TX---The 8th Annual "KIXY Cares for Kids Radiothon" kicked off and runs from February 24-26. Last year the radiothon brought in over $155,000 for the local children’s charity. This past summer the Colts, Foster Communications and the Children's Miracle Network teamed up on "Foster Communications/Children's Miracle Network Jersey Auction Night" to raise $1485 for the local charity.
The Colts players wore the Jersey's during the game and fans bid on them right after the game. This has become an annual Colts tradition each summer at the park that Foster Communications continues to sponsor. Colts GM Mike Babcock and Director of Community Relations and Broadcasting Ira Liebman (pictured here) presented the ceremonial check to Charla Adams of the Children's Miracle Network as well as DJs Jay Michaels and David Carr during the radiothon on Friday the second day of the event.
100 percent of the contribution stays at Shannon Medical Center to benefit the Pediatric Unit, Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, Trauma, Emergency Room, Shannon Pediatric Clinic and any other department that could possibly treat a child. Last year they treated more than 16,800 children. These children were treated for a variety of illnesses and come from diverse ethnic and economic backgrounds and were treated without regard for their ability to pay. The primary goal of the local Children's Miracle Network is to provide services, equipment and training necessary so that a child can stay in San Angelo at home for their treatments. Knowing how difficult it can be to travel 3 to 4 hours for treatments leaving part of the family at home.
The local chapter treated children with Leukemia and those who only needed fluids in their Pediatric Outpatient Center. Donations have assisted in purchasing a pediatric sized Hill-Rom Vest which helps children with Cystic Fibrosis, pneumonia and asthma. They were able to assist with the cost of training nurses for Pediatric Life Support, trauma and chemotherapy. If you would like to make a donation you can call 657-8385 during the radiothon or 481-6160 at any other time during the year.
