WhiteWings earn walk-off win vs. Colts

By:
After winning six in a row, the Colts have now lost four straight to the WhiteWings.
07/07/2012 10:19 PM - Harlingen, Texas --- First baseman Romulo Ruiz hit a walk-off RBI single in the ninth inning to give the Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings a 3-2 win over the Colts Saturday night at Harlingen Field.

Ruiz’s game-winning base hit comes one night after his game-tying two-run homer against San Angelo. The single scored left fielder Ruddy Yan, who reached base on a fielders’ choice. Ruiz went 3-for-4 on the night.

Colts reliever Michael Hacker (1-1) surrendered the walk-off hit, and took the loss. Starter Brian Henschel gave up two runs on 10 hits in seven innings for the no decision.

WhiteWings’ reliever and former Major Leaguer Alberto Reyes (2-2) earned the win, pitching 1 2/3 shutout innings. Starter Celson Polanco gave up two runs on five hits in 7 1/3 innings, and settled for the no decision.

San Angelo scored in the first and eighth innings, but the WhiteWings had a response each time.

Right fielder J.J. Sherrill scored both Colts’ runs. He led off the first with an infield single, and then scored on an RBI base hit by centerfielder Ronnie Gaines. Then in the eighth, Sherrill drew a leadoff walk and scored thanks to designated hitter Cory Patton’s RBI single.

The WhiteWings scored their first two runs in the bottom of the first, courtesy of a wild pitch and an RBI single by Yan.

The win improves Rio Grande Valley to 24-18, while the loss drops San Angelo to 21-21. This series concludes Sunday night at 7:05 p.m. The game can be heard live on KKSA beginning at 6:50 p.m.

The Colts’ next home game is Saturday, July 14 when they host the McAllen Thunder at 7:05 p.m. It will be Glow-In-The-Dark Baseball Night, sponsored by AEP Texas. The first 1,000 fans through the gates will get a glow-in-the-dark Colts’ baseball, courtesy of AEP Texas.

The Colts are a member of United League Baseball who are in their 13th season. Tickets are on sale now, and available at the Colts’ front office at Foster Field.
